Ian Mitchell

Director:

Ian Mitchell B.A., M.A., B.Ed. ... To develop the Marine and Environmental Science Program, Ian Mitchell has drawn on a long and varied career in underwater exploration and marine research. Certified at advanced levels of SCUBA and commercial diving, Ian is responsible for implementing many on-site training programs and instructional seminars within hospital, university and Secondary School forums. Ian's Bachelor and Master degrees have focused on the effects of prolonged exposure to depth through diving experiments performed at the Defence and Civil Institute of Environmental Medicine, (DCIEM) Canadian Forces Base, Toronto. He is the author of several scientific papers on underwater research and has contributed underwater artifacts to the Royal Ontario Museum. Ian earned his Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto in 1998 and is a former Ontario teacher, now with Gulf Islands Secondary School, School District 64 on Salt Spring Island British Columbia. Ian is a member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences and the Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society and served on the Executive Committee of the Great Lakes Chapter for over ten years. He presently serves on the Salt Spring Island Conservancy Foundation Education Committee.


Teachers:

Julie Kelly Julie Kelly B.Sc., B.Ed.... Julie has been teaching in the Halton District School Board since 1999. She is a science specialist, who has taught in a variety of settings over the past several years. She particularly enjoyed teaching primary health care in Guyana and sharing her love of science at the Saskatchewan Science Centre. More recently, she has dedicated her time to her school's Outdoor Club, where she participates in hiking, canoeing and fundraising activities promoting environmental stewardship. Julie is an enthusiastic individual who encourages her students to challenge themselves both in and out of the classroom.


Mee Ming Wong Mee Ming Wong B.Sc., B.Ed....Mee Ming has been teaching secondary school sciences for over 20 years. In addition to teaching secondary school biology, general science and mathematics, Mee Ming promotes a style of science education that encourages students to engage in open-ended, realistic science encounters and brings with her a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to the program.



SCUBA Instructor:

Chris Blondeau Christian Blondeau... A SCUBA instructor with extensive experience in the local waters from Saanich Inlet to Race Rocks to Port Renfrew, Chris brings previous Naval Officer Training with the Canadian Armed Forces to the Marine and Environmental Science Program. Certified in First Aid Training from St. John Ambulance, Chris conveys the safety and discipline initiative necessary for safe diving practices.



Curriculum Advisors:

Art Robinson Art Robinson B.A., B.Ed.... A teacher in Greater Toronto's schools since 1967, Art brings his extensive experience to the outdoor classroom of the Pacific West Coast. An Environmental Science Specialist and certified at advanced SCUBA levels, Art has led numerous Secondary School outdoor field trips involving Environmental Science, canoeing as well as underwater video and photography objectives. Art is an environmental science promoter whose innate curiosity and enthusiasm for nature is truly contagious.



Jane Johnston Jane Johnston B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed.... Jane has been a teacher since 1994, and brings her teaching experience in Secondary School Biology to the ecosystems of Vancouver Island. A longtime SCUBA enthusiast, Jane has also led a number of outdoor education and canoe trips in Ontario's wilderness. Jane holds advanced teaching certifications in Aquatics and Physical Education and is the recipient of the 1994 Lieutenant Governor's Silver Medal Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. Jane brings a wealth of outdoor education skills and knowledge to the Marine and Environmental Science Program.



Peel District School Board:

Centre for Education and Training Dave Turner B.A., M.A., B.Ed.... Always seeking innovative and fresh approaches to education, Dave Turner has extensive Secondary School experience as a teacher and a Principal with the Peel District School Board. Dave is responsible for a broad range of Community Education Programs and services for the Peel District School Board as well as overseeing the academic component of the Marine and Environmental Science Program.
