Race Rocks is a Marine Protected Area and regarded as an ecological treasure located in the transitional waters where the Juan de Fuca and Georgia Straits converge. The movement of waters in the area creates an upwelling of nutrients resulting in a diverse and abundant range of life forms. High levels of plankton and nutrients has led to the local enhancement of biodiversity and populations of invertebrates, fish and marine mammals including otters, whales, harbour seals and sea lions. All studies within this area are performed with respect to the wildlife in order to preserve this fragile yet spectacular ecosystem. Ask any diver who has been there, "Why go?" and the answer invariably will come back, "Animals!" Bull kelp, basket stars, giant red urchins, and inquisitive sea lions and harbour seals are just some of the wildlife you will likely encounter at the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve.
